Phillip “Phil” Edwin Mullen Jr., age 69, of Pleasant Grove, AL passed away on December 29, 2023, after a prolonged battle with Myelodysplastic Syndrome.
Phil was born on September 2, 1954, in Fairfield, AL to Phillip and Joy Mullen. He spent the first 12 years of his life living in Bayview, AL right up the street from his grandparents, uncles, and aunt before moving to Minor, AL in 1966. After he graduated from Minor High School in 1973, he attended the University of Alabama for one year before joining the United States Air Force. Phil spent most of his military career in the security forces which allowed him the opportunity to live and travel to interesting destinations around the world. While in the military, he continued his education and earned his B.S. in Criminal Justice in 1994 from the University of Southern Mississippi. After retiring from the military in 1994 he returned home to Minor, AL, at which time, he applied and was accepted to the Police Academy. He spent 20 years as a Police Officer with the City of Birmingham and retired in April 2021. From the time he joined the boy scouts as a young boy, and through his careers in the United States Air Force, and the Police Force, Phil was dedicated to the service of others; always committed to improving life for those in his family and community.
Phil was an attentive and committed Uncle who was always there for his nephews and nieces. He taught them how to hunt and took them hunting with him as often as possible. Phil could be depended on to assist with getting them to their coaching sessions, practices, and games when called upon and was always in the stands cheering them on.
He leaves behind his loving and devoted sisters Sharon Mullen Pardue of McCalla, AL and Pamela Mullen Boyles (Hal) of Huntsville, AL; his beloved nephews Michael Pardue, Shaun Boyles (Kathyrn), Brandon Boyles (Jacques), and niece Tiffany Pardue Stewart (Jon); his great nieces Amber Pardue, Ashley Pardue, Kailee Pardue, and Chloe Boyles as well as many other loving relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents Phillip Edwin Mullen, Agnes (Joy) Burchfield Mullen, and his constant companion “Little Bit” his black lab.
The family will receive friends on Sunday January 14th, 2024, from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m., at the Patterson-Forest Grove Funeral Home in Pleasant Grove, AL. A funeral service will be held at 3:00 p.m. in the Chapel.
