Nila Jo Herring, age 89, passed away January 1, 2018. She was a Birmingham resident living her later years in Pleasant Grove, McCalla and Hoover.
She was predeceased by her first husband, Joe Crapet; her second husband, Gene Herring; her daughter, Mary Jane (Janie) Gardner; Janie's husband, Michael Gardner; and her brother, Wilburn Storie.
Ms. Herring is survived by her son, Lee Crapet (Sandy); step-son, Skip Herring (Patti); five grandchildren, Andie Dorsett (Scooter), Jason Gardner (Deanna), Tiffany Chandler (Adam), Mary Crapet, and Joseph Crapet; six great-grandchildren, Grace Gardner, Aidan Gardner, Abby Chandler, Dane Dorsett (Katelyn), Levi Dorsett and Eryn Dorsett; two great-great-grandchildren Hayes and Bryce Dorsett; her brother, Bennie Storie (Annie Jo); and nephews, Phil Storie (Beth) and Ken Storie (Ann).
Ms. Herring was loved by her First Baptist Church of Hoover church family in her later years. She will be remembered for her deep love of family, wonderful cooking and love of animals. She was very grateful for the opportunity to work at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama for 22 years. She will always be known as "Mama Jo" by her Blue Cross family.
She spent her last couple of years "helping" the residents and staff of Diversicare of Riverchase. Her family is very grateful to her sitter and friend, Laline Bagley.
Ms. Herring will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
The funeral service will be at Forest Grove Memorial Gardens, handled by Patterson Forest Grove Funeral Home at 2:00 Thursday, January 4, 2018. A time of visitation will be one hour prior to the service .
