Leona Coachman Vann was born on June 28, 1933, to the late Leatha Johnson and Henry Ottison. She was educated in the Fairfield City School System. After graduating from high school, she went on to study Nursing in California. After returning to Alabama, she married Willie Frank Vann, Sr. and to this union brought forth five children.
At a young age, she became a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Fairfield, AL. She enjoyed working in the church, particularly with the Altar Society.
She retired from Childrens of Alabama after working from 1967 until 2005. She also studied real estate. She enjoyed reading, writing and poetry and spent lots of time fishing and outings with her family. In her twilight years, she attended McCoy Adult Day Care, where she thrived socially with her adult peers. She attended many religious services, also learned to master Arts and Crafts.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Willie Frank Vann, Sr., her sister, Ruth Riley and her daughter-in-law, Helen Renee Vann. She leaves to cherish her memory a loving and devoted family. Five children: Delois Medhin (Teodros); Willie F. Vann, Jr.; Lorraine Burse (Charles); Calvin Vann (Felicia); and Angela Roberts. Grandchildren; Eboné Robinson(Joseph, Sr.), Elizabeth Medhin, Paul Roberts, Jr. (Shabre), Helina Medhim, Aaron Vann and Tangela Roberts. Great grandchildren: William Vann, Joseph Robinson, Jr., Emmanuella Medhin, Timothy Billups, Paul Roberts, III, Elijah Roberts and Ne’mont Vann. A devoted nephew, Willie Riley, Jr. (Tonya). A loving cousin, Azalean Kiel and a host of family, friends and church members. Visitation will be Tuesday, February 8, 2022 from 1:00 PM until 5:00 PM at Patterson Forest Grove Funeral Home. Graveside service will be Wednesday, February 9, 2022 at 12:00 PM in Patterson Forest Grove Memorial Gardens. Father Philip D. Paxton, CP officiating.
