Elizabeth C. Carter (“Liz”) passed away peacefully at her home on Sunday, September 1, 2024. Liz was surrounded by her sons and their wives as she found peace with her Lord and Savior. Liz was a lifelong resident of Bessemer, AL. She had the opportunity to travel with her husband, Sonny, during his military service. They had the opportunity to live in South Carolina, Rhode Island, and Connecticut. During her time in Connecticut, Liz was selected to serve as a Navy Ombudsman for the Commanding Officer of the USS Sunbird stationed in Groton, CT. Ombudsmen are Navy spouse volunteers, appointed by the commanding officer who serve two important roles as a communication link between the commanding officer and command families as well as a professionally trained information and referral specialist for the command's families. Upon Sonny’s retirement, Liz worked for several years at Wal-Mart where she served many people with a smile and developed numerous friends. Liz loved our Lord and Savior. She was a member of Crossway Baptist Church in Bessemer, AL where she loved being a part of the choir and singing at Sunday services. Liz was known to many as “Mom”, “Granny”, “Della”, and “Mony”.
Liz is survived by her two sons, James (Stacie) and Michael (Cassie) Carter. She had three grandchildren, Andrew, Ethan, and Kayla Carter, who she often referred to as her “babies”. She is survived by her sisters, Gaynell Cliett and Cora May Ferguson (Ray), and her brothers, Charles Burton, Sr. (Jean) and James W. Cliett (Teresa). Liz had several cousins, nieces, and nephews that she adored and often shared stories. Liz is preceded in death by her husband, Thomas E. Carter (“Sonny”); father, James A. Cliett (“Paw Paw”); and mothers, Helen Prince and Maybelle Virginia Cliett (“Maw Maw”).
Liz will be laid to rest with Sonny on Friday, September 6, 2024, at Patterson-Forest Hills Funeral Home and Cemetery in Pleasant Grove, AL. Visitation will start at 10:00am with Services and Burial starting at 11:00am. Everyone is welcome to attend this celebration of her life.
