John Buford Herndon, Sr.

Deceased: 12/20/14

“Papa”, died peacefully at home on Saturday December 20, 2014, at the age of 92, with family by his side. Born in Macon, Georgia in 1922, he was a WWII veteran, serving aboard the light cruiser USS Nashville in the Pacific. He was an alumnus of Jones Valley High School and the University of Alabama where he played in the ‘Million Dollar Band’. Throughout Papa’s life he served in many crucial roles at which he excelled - devoted and loving son, brother, husband, father, and grandfather, providing a godly example to his children, grandchildren, and anyone that had the privilege of knowing him. He was preceded in death by his siblings, Virgil, Eleanor, and Walter, and is survived by his wife of 65 years Mae, daughter Emily Shaw (Buddy), son John B., Jr. (Jeanette), 6 grandchildren, and 9 great grandchildren. Special thanks to Life Choice Hospice and caregivers Sandra and Sabrina. Buford was one of the finest, kindest men it was ever my privilege to know. He was also a wonderful musician. He will never be forgotten. We pray that God will be a powerful and comforting presence during this time of grief.
