John Buford Herndon, Sr.
“Papa”, died peacefully at home on Saturday December 20, 2014, at the age of 92, with family by his side. Born in Macon, Georgia in 1922, he was a WWII veteran, serving aboard the light cruiser USS Nashville in the Pacific. He was an alumnus of Jones Valley High School and the University of Alabama where he played in the ‘Million Dollar Band’. Following retirement from Reynolds Aluminum, he continued working as a musician, often playing at The Club. Throughout Papa’s life he served in many crucial roles at which he excelled - devoted and loving son, brother, husband, father, and grandfather, providing a godly example to his children, grandchildren, and anyone that had the privilege of knowing him. He was preceded in death by his siblings, Virgil, Eleanor, and Walter, and is survived by his wife of 65 years Mae, daughter Emily Shaw (Buddy), son John B., Jr. (Jeanette), 6 grandchildren, and 9 great grandchildren. Special thanks to Life Choice Hospice and caregivers Sandra and Sabrina. Visitation will be at Patterson Forest Grove Funeral Home in Pleasant Grove, AL on Friday, December 26, at 11 A.M. with services following at noon. Burial will be at Highland Memorial Gardens.

We are so sorry to hear about your Dad, John, and know it's always hard to give up a parent. We're praying for you and your family.
Buford was one of the finest, kindest men it was ever my privilege to know. He was also a wonderful musician. He will never be forgotten. We pray that God will be a powerful and comforting presence during this time of grief.
