Obituary of Paul D. Faden

Pleasant Grove, AL - Mr. Paul D. Faden, formerly of Framingham, MA died Saturday, January 1, 2011 at the Legacy Health and Rehabilitation nursing home in Pleasant Grove, AL. He was 92 years old and the husband of the late Ruth V. (Bernard) Faden for nearly 50 years.

Paul was born on April 5, 1918 in Boston, MA, the son of Andrew F. and Miriam (White) Faden. He was raised in Hyde Park, and attended the Roxbury Latin School (class of 1936). From there he went to Harvard (class of 1941), where his education was interrupted by WW II. During the war he enlisted in the army, took courses at MIT, and then served as an administrator at Lovell General and Cushing Hospital, with the rank of 2nd Lieutenant. He also trained soldiers in Alabama and Texas for oversees deployment. After the war he completed his undergraduate degree at Northeastern with a Bachelor of Business Administration in Engineering and Management (with honors, 1950), followed by a Master of Business Administration at Northeastern. After 41 years of service he retired as the administrative head of rehabilitation at the VA Hospital in Jamaica Plain. As a Framingham resident for 55 years he has many acquaintances in this area. Paul and Ruth were original participants of the Framingham Heart Study started in 1948. His children later participated in the offspring studies.
 Paul had a long amateur tennis career that included club matches and tournaments throughout New England. His competitive nature, running ability, consistent play and experience earned him respect in many tennis circles. He made many lifelong friends through tennis, who valued his advice and enthusiasm for the sport. He was a past president and honorary member of the Sudbury River Tennis Club in Framingham, MA. He had also been a member of the Longwood Cricket Club in Chestnut Hill, MA.

Paul spent his later years as a resident of Lady Lake, Florida then Morris, Alabama, in a quest for warmer weather, rekindling old friendships, and pursuing his passions for sports, gardening and analysis of business news.

He is survived by a daughter Barbara and her husband, Craig Smithson (step grandson Curt and his wife Amy with their children Camden and Chloe, and step grandson Mark) of Fairfield, CA; a son Andrew Faden (grandchildren Jenna, Ian and William) and his wife Marylou of Grafton, MA; a son Arthur Faden (grandchildren Laura, Ashley and Andrew) and his wife Ellen of Hopkinton, MA; and many nieces and nephews. Another son was the late Paul W. Faden of Framingham. He is also survived by his sister Dorothy F. Ellis of Marshfield, MA. He was the brother of the late Barbara Thomas of Marblehead, MA and Phillip Faden of Medford, MA.

A memorial service will be held at a site and date to be announced. Burial will be in Edgell Grove Cemetery in Framingham.
