John A. Moore

Deceased: 06/28/17

John A. Moore, 90, of Pleasant Grove, AL passed away on Wednesday, June 28, 2017 following a brief illness. His family was constantly at his side during his last days and he passed away peacefully. He was preceded in death by his wife, Janice H. Moore, who passed away in 1987. John grew up in Brighton, AL and graduated from Bessemer High School. He joined the Navy in 1945 and served in the Seabees, most notably on the island of Guam in the Pacific Theater of WWII. He loved baseball and fishing and pursued both enthusiastically. He eventually signed a professional baseball contract and played a short time in the Cincinnati Reds system. After the war and after baseball, he met Janice Bernard Huffman, his future wife, on a streetcar. They married in 1948 and began to build a life together. In 1949 the first addition to the family arrived. The family eventually grew to 5 children. John was the leader of this family and led by a quiet Christian example. He was a kind and gentle man and a faithful servant of Christ. To support his growing family, he began an apprenticeship as a pattern maker (woodworking) under the guidance of a loving uncle. He honed his skill to an expert level, developing an eye for perfection which enjoyed no compromise. He spent his entire career in woodworking and dearly loved crafting items for his family, friends, and the church he loved. Whether building a bookcase, a table, a shelf, a cross, or turning a lathe to make a baseball bat, in his hands each item became a work of art. John loved his community and his church and at 90 years old he still delivered Meals on Wheels, played dominoes 3 times a week, loved Bluebirds, loved watching the Atlanta Braves on TV, and loved a Jack’s sausage biscuit. Over the years he cherished every moment of time he spent with his family. John is survived by 3 sons: John William ”Billy” Moore (Deborah), Michael Moore (Cathy), Carey Moore (Bene’t); 2 daughters: Jan Windle (Mike), Judy Chapin (David); 10 grandchildren, and 8 great grandchildren. Funeral Services will be Friday, June 30, 2017 at Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church at 1:00 P.M. with the burial to follow at Valhalla Cemetery Rev. John Gates officiating. Visitation will be at 11:30 A.M. - 1:00 P.M. at the church. Patterson-Forest Grove Funeral Home directing.
