James Luther Maddox

Deceased: 06/07/17

James Luther Maddox (86), known as “Spyder” to many and known affectionately to family as Papa, passed away Wednesday June 7, 2017. James was born August 25, 1930. He is preceded in death by his parents Mr. and Mrs. A.L. Maddox of Belk AL, his sister, Maxine Maddox Cargile, his granddaughter Lindy Michelle Maddox, and his great-granddaughter Maddox Elise Hodge. James is survived by his wife, of nearly 67 years, T. Rae Maddox and five children: Michael Maddox (Julie), Richard Maddox (Sharon), and Randall Maddox (Susan) all from Pleasant Grove, Terri Maddox Lamons (Reggie) of McCalla, and Jeff Maddox (Rhonda) of Springville, Alabama. James (Papa) had an exceptional career at U. S. Steel as a supervisor in data processing. He retired after 44 years of dedicated service. He enjoyed cooking, gardening, hunting, and fishing but his passion was his family. He had a smile that could warm the coldest heart and words of wisdom that rivaled Job. Papa always said “the only two things you have in life are your word and your name” and that is faithfully how he lived his life. He was a true patriarch whose deep rooted love for Jesus was demonstrated in everything he did. His legacy of hard work, patience, kindness, and love for others will live on in his 13 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren. He is deeply and lovingly missed. A celebration of life service is planned for Friday, June 9, 2017 at First Baptist Church Pleasant Grove. Visitation will be at 12:00 pm and the service will begin at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to First Baptist Church Pleasant Grove.
