Charles Bruce Childers Sr.

Charles Bruce Childers Sr., born; February 10, 1926 in Wyan, WV. Died; September 14, 2015, in Pleasant Grove, AL. After graduating from Woodrow Wilson High School in Beckley, WV., he enlisted in the US Navy in 1944 and went to Great Lakes, IL. Boot Camp. He underwent training for PT boat service and served in the Philippines until 1946, attaining the rank of 3rd Class Petty Officer. He was proud to be a veteran of World War II. After his Naval Service he attended Western Kentucky College in Bowling Green. After graduating with a degree in accounting in 1951, he went to work for US Steel Corporation and moved to Fairfield, AL. He worked in various positions in the accounting department and rose to the position of Manager of Accounting for the Southern District before his retirement in 1983. He is preceded in death by his beloved wife of 56 years; Betty Frances Hawks. Parents; Bethel Childers and Bessie Horton Pratt. Brothers; Wayne Childers, who was killed during the invasion of Normandy, and Calvin Childers. Sister; Priscilla Cook. He is survived by sisters; Gladys Sinclair, Billie Ellison, Peggy Dyer and Betty Jo Kilgore as well as many nieces and nephews and his constant companion, Zoe, a Yorkshire Terrier. He married Betty Frances Hawks in 1949 and had three children, Charles Bruce Childers Jr. and twin daughters; Brenda Kaye Childers Dye and Linda Gay Childers Jennings (Edward). He is also survived by grandchildren; Lauren Fuson (Scott), Shanna Waroway and Allison Jennings Sheffield (David). Great grandchildren; Miller Fuson and Joss Waroway, William Sheffield. The members of his adult Sunday Class and his Sylvan Springs Senior Center family. Close friends, Bud Waters, Don Paulk, Clarence South Bill Vice and Howard Dees. Bruce was an active member of First Baptist Church of Pleasant Grove where he taught the Adult Senior Sunday School Class and served on the Church Finance Committee. He also was in regular attendance at the Sylvan Springs Senior Center. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the First Baptist Church, Pleasant Grove Benevolent Fund, The family will receive friends on Thursday, September 17 from 6:00 - 8:00 PM. Funeral services will be held on Friday, September 18 at 10:00 AM. Both services will be at Patterson-Forest Grove Funeral Home , Pleasant Grove, AL. Special thanks to the staff of Baptist Medical Center Princeton and New Beacon Hospice. Rev. Harold Newberry officiating.
